The Wick-Raft Method: Hydroponics Simplified by Robert Anderson..The wick-raft method is a simple and obvious hydroponic technique to grow vegetable or flower plants. This method uses a small amount of potting soil and a larger amount of water to grow plants. This technique is simple because no pumps or electricity are needed. It is an “off-the-grid” system that can be set up wherever the sun shines.
It is an inexpensive system because the materials used are inexpensive or simply recycled from materials around your home. It works fine outdoors, inside a greenhouse, or under lights in a garage or classroom. Use tap water or rain water to grow your plants. Fertilizer, conventional or organic, can be added to the water or to the potting soil. If the fertilizer is added to the potting soil, there is no need to manage the water pH with a pH meter. Plus, it is not necessary to manage the concentration of fertilizer, electrical conductivity, in the water with a conductivity meter.
