This book is published posthumously, after the tragic suicide of its author Arwa Saleh last summer. Saleh was a figure in the students' movement of the early 1970s, which had arisen in response to the 1967 defeat, the un-democratic practices in the country and the social injustices to which the majority in Egypt are exposed. In her first book, Al-Mubtasaroun (The Stillborn), Saleh had directed acerbic criticism against herself, her contemporaries and the Left in general with an uncompromising candour that welled out of her idealism.
As for the present volume, Saratan Al-Rawh (Cancer in the Soul), it is a compendium of her unpublished papers. In "Solitary, roaming daydreams", Saleh writes about an earlier suicide attempt, while in "Portraits" she describes various people she has known. The book also contains a critical study of novelist Sonallah Ibrahim's works as well as a long prose poem with the same title as the volume.
